Rujunko Pugh
Rujunko Pugh was born in Japan of African-American and Japanese
descent. Her childhood was spent in California and North Carolina. She
attended Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina to earn a
biology degree and within that period took an introductory photography
class as an elective. After graduation, Rujunko gained experience in
commercial photography as a photographer's assistant. At this point,
she began utilizing photography to study the forms and textures of
readily available plants, fruits and vegetables. A few years later in
1999, she moved to Hawaii and was inspired by the unique and isolated
environmental beauty of the island and began actively photographing
the flora, specifically native, endemic and Polynesian introduced
species. Returning to the science field, but not forgetting about her
creative interests, she earned an M.S. in Molecular Biosciences and
Bioengineering in 2004 and then completed two years of photography
studio and art history courses at the University of Hawaii. Combining
her experiences in art and science, some of her work incoporates the
plant's specific DNA sequences retrieved from a publicly available
database. She emerged in the Hawaii art scene in 2006 and exhibited in
numerous solo and group exhibitions and received award recognitions
for her work. Now based in Washington, D.C., Rujunko will continue
working with plants and scientific concepts.
