Gian Garofalo - "Private Archipelagos"
Opening Reception - Thursday, June 1st, 6:30-8pm

North Carolina based artist, Gian Garofalo, spent a large portion of his early adolescence and young adulthood living in the coastal region of southern Norway. Garofalo’s new works, featured in “Private Archipelagos”, are inspired by the natural environment of Norway as well as his time spent exploring the region’s surrounding islands, fjords and bodies of water.

For Garofalo, these "Private Archipelagos" invoke serenity and represent a place for reflection on the life experiences that have shaped him as a person on his continued journey of self-discovery.

July 21 - September 3, 2017
Rebecca Coles
Opening Reception - Friday, July 21st, 6:30-8pm

UK based artist Rebecca Coles describes herself as a paper artist. Cole’s work currently focuses on the reinvention of entomological cataloguing, display and the assemblage of shapes. She is fascinated with the process by which three-dimensional decorative forms materialize out of flat sheets of paper. Her work requires an absolute labor of love, where repetition has always been notable and each piece is composed of hundreds if not thousands of profiles.

Each shape is hand drawn and then intricately hand cut from carefully selected paper, focusing on recycling a medium that would otherwise be discarded and lost. She dissects small details of color, imagery and text into silhouettes that are then re-sculptured, pinned and encased.

Sondra N. Arkin - "What You See Is All There Is"
Opening Reception - Thursday, October 12th, 6:30-8pm

In Daniel Kahneman’s best-selling book Thinking Fast and Slow, the famous behavioral psychologist explains the cognitive biases that lead people to jump to conclusions without all of the facts. In short, we generally form impressions based on limited or mistaken information, a concept he calls What You See Is All There Is.

For this latest solo exhibition, What You See Is All There Is, Arkin used this concept as a starting point to explore in painting the boundaries and connections that shape our interactions. With titles that can be helpful or misleading, the work is presented for spontaneous or studied interpretation. Both intimate and larger works align their linear, graphic, and tonal qualities to my dimensional interest and inspirations – exploring juxtapositions and textures and our relationship to them.

Color has been constricted in an effort to highlight the compositions. Unlike previous bodies of work, these paintings have been made sequentially, exploring the use of wax, ink and shellac in varying combinations alongside other media. While they often use observations as launching pads, they have no mimetic pretensions, hence the title of the show, with a nod to Daniel Kahneman and the idea that what you see at first glance may not be all there is.
